Impeachment Plot: Rivers Assembly Members Divided, Fail To Reconvene Plenary

There seems to be cracks in the Rivers State House of Assembly, a development that has apparently forced the House not to reconvene plenary as planned on Thursday.

26 members of the House had on Thursday, January 8, 2026, signed Impeachment Notices against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.

However, days later, two principal officers of the House, including the Minority Leader, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, and the Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, backed out of the impeachment plot against the governor and his deputy.

Other lawmakers, who have so far opted out of the impeachment move against Fubara, were Hon. Peter Abbey and Hon. Emilia Amadi, who represents Obio/Akpor Constituency 2, where the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, hails from.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, had after the plenary on Thursday, January 8, adjourned sitting till Thursday, January 15, 2026.

However, as of noon on Thursday, January 15, 2026, our correspondent who visited the Assembly, observed that there was no sign that the House, which presently holds sittings at the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road, would reconvene.

No explanation has been provided for the delay, nor has a date for resumption been announced.

Efforts to reach the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Eneme George, for clarification proved unsuccessful.

He neither answered calls nor responded to messages sent to his known phone line as of the time of filing this report.
