Indorama Ventures has entered a strategic partnership with Nigerian Breweries Plc and Genesis Power & Energy Solutions Ltd to develop one of Africa’s largest recycled polyethene terephthalate (rPET) production facilities in Nigeria.
The companies announced that the facility, to be located in Lagos, will have a planned capacity to produce up to 45,000 tonnes of food-grade rPET resin annually, with operations expected to commence in the first half of 2027.
According to the partners, the initiative will also help strengthen Nigeria’s recycling ecosystem by improving waste collection systems, creating jobs, and expanding participation across the recycling value chain.
The collaboration brings together different capabilities across the PET value chain. Indorama Ventures, regarded as one of the world’s largest recyclers of PET used in beverage packaging, will provide technical expertise in sustainable materials and recycling technology.
Nigerian Breweries, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., will contribute local market knowledge and industry engagement within Nigeria’s beverage sector.
Genesis Power & Energy Solutions will support the project with infrastructure and sustainable energy expertise to power the facility.
The partners said the project remains subject to regulatory approvals, technical validation and operational implementation before full development begins.
Commenting on the partnership, executive president of Petchem and chairman of the ESG Council at Indorama Ventures, Yash Lohia, described the investment as a significant step in expanding the company’s global recycling footprint.
He said the project would bring the company’s recycling technologies and circular economy expertise to a region with growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions.
Indorama Ventures currently operates 20 recycling facilities across 11 countries and has recycled more than 160 billion post-consumer PET bottles into reusable materials.
Also speaking on the initiative, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Genesis Energy, Akinwole II Omoboriowo, said the partnership reflects the role of cross-sector collaboration in advancing sustainable industrial development.
