The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a four-day technical training workshop for Electoral Officers (EOs) and Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) in preparation for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for 2026.

The workshop, which began on Thursday, January 9, 2026, at the Silver Green Hotel in Gudu, Abuja, focused on the theme ‘Effective Management of Key Election Activities’.

According to the Commission, the training aimed to strengthen the operational capacity of key field officers by deepening their understanding of the electoral legal framework, as well as the policies, processes, and procedures guiding the conduct of elections in Nigeria.

INEC explained that participants were being equipped with the requisite skills to effectively plan, organise, and manage critical electoral activities in line with established guidelines.

“This workshop is designed to enhance participants’ ability to develop comprehensive election implementation plans that promote effective administrative communication and seamless coordination,” the Commission stated.

A major highlight of the training is the focus on clarifying the roles and responsibilities of Electoral Officers and their Assistants in ensuring credible and transparent elections.

INEC further noted that the capacity-building exercise formed a key component of its broader preparations for the #FCTDecides2026 elections, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and operational excellence in election management.

“Continuous capacity building remains a foundation for the delivery of credible, transparent, and well-managed elections,” the Commission emphasised.

The four-day workshop was part of INEC’s sustained efforts to ensure that election officials at all levels were adequately prepared to deliver a smooth and credible electoral process in the FCT.
