The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored full representation for the North-East geopolitical zone with the inauguration of a new National Commissioner, a move seen as critical to its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Manafa (rtd.) was formally received by the Commission following her swearing-in by the President of Nigeria, ending over a year of vacancy in the zone.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, described the appointment as timely, noting that it strengthens the Commission’s capacity at a crucial phase in the electoral calendar.

He said the development enhances decision-making within the Commission as it intensifies planning for a series of electoral activities ahead of 2027.

According to him, INEC is already preparing for by-elections and other off-cycle polls, which he described as key tests of the Commission’s readiness.

“These elections will serve as important benchmarks as we prepare for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 2027, as well as the Governorship and State Assembly elections in February 2027,” he said.

Amupitan also highlighted the new Commissioner’s experience in legal practice, military service, and logistics, expressing confidence that her expertise would strengthen electoral planning, security coordination, and dispute management.

He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering credible and transparent elections, despite emerging challenges.

In her remarks, Rear Admiral Manafa expressed appreciation for the warm reception, describing the Commission as a “new professional family.”

Speaking at INEC headquarters in Abuja, she said her background would support the Commission’s operations and pledged to contribute to national development and stability.

“I pray and hope that we are going to work together for the development and stability of this country. In God we stand and in God we serve,” she said.

She also prayed for the success of upcoming elections and the safety of electoral personnel, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
