Influence or Infamy Does Being Controversial Pay Better Than Being Talented

In an attention-driven entertainment economy where online arguments can attract millions of views, controversy is increasingly becoming a route to visibility. But does being talked about necessarily translate into money, influence or a lasting career?

On social media, a carefully produced music video, an insightful interview or a well-written piece of content may compete for attention with a celebrity quarrel or a provocative online statement. Yet, quite often, it is the quarrel that takes over timelines, generates thousands of comments and finds its way onto entertainment blogs.

The contrast raises an uncomfortable question about the changing value of talent in the entertainment industry: has being controversial become more commercially rewarding than being genuinely good at one’s craft?

Across Nigeria’s entertainment and digital content landscape, public visibility has become an important currency. Musicians, actors, comedians and social media personalities are competing in an increasingly crowded space where remaining relevant can be almost as demanding as producing quality work.

For some, controversy offers a shortcut. A provocative statement, public disagreement, online confrontation or seemingly outrageous opinion can quickly place an otherwise little-known personality at the centre of public discussion. The attention may translate into increased followers, media coverage, invitations, promotional opportunities and, in some instances, commercial partnerships.

The attraction is understandable. In a digital environment where everyone is competing to be noticed, being talked about, even negatively, can appear preferable to being ignored.

But there is a difference between being influential and being infamous.

Influence suggests the ability to shape opinions, inspire action, command trust or contribute something meaningful to public conversations. Infamy, on the other hand, may keep someone in the public eye without necessarily establishing their credibility, expertise or value beyond the latest controversy.

The workings of social media platforms help explain why the distinction sometimes becomes blurred.

A Stanford report published in August 2026 examined research showing how engagement-based recommendation systems on X can amplify provocative content. Users were found to engage more with some posts they disagreed with, creating an environment where outrage and disagreement could increase visibility.

In practical terms, a person does not have to agree with a controversial post to help it travel. A criticism, angry response, repost or argument can all contribute to its engagement. The platform registers activity, but that activity does not necessarily represent approval.

For content creators, this creates an interesting but difficult incentive. A post that attracts criticism may receive more attention than one that demonstrates professional ability or offers useful information. The pressure to remain visible can gradually influence what creators choose to publish and how far they are willing to go to attract reactions.

However, visibility should not be mistaken for income.

A study published in Journalism and Media in August 2026 by researchers at Nile University of Nigeria examined the monetisation experiences of 23 Nigerian TikTok influencers aged 19 to 26.

The research found that creators depend on several income channels, including brand partnerships, sponsored promotions, referrals and visibility across different platforms. It also identified limited direct monetisation opportunities, unstable payment arrangements, brand distrust and the pressure to remain continuously relevant.

The findings expose an important gap in the attention economy: building an audience does not automatically guarantee financial security. Even creators with substantial followings must find ways to convert visibility into actual commercial opportunities.

This makes the argument that controversy always pays more difficult to sustain. A trending personality may attract millions of views without necessarily securing consistent income or the confidence of brands.

For businesses, attention is useful, but it is not the only consideration. A large audience may offer exposure, yet the personality attached to that audience, the credibility of the endorsement and the relationship with potential customers also matter.

Talent, meanwhile, offers something different. It gives an entertainer or creator a product that can be developed, improved and presented repeatedly. A comedian’s ability to write and perform, a musician’s songwriting and production skills, or a filmmaker’s storytelling ability can create opportunities beyond a single viral moment.

Nigerian comedian Broda Shaggi provides an example of the work behind successful digital entertainment. Reporting by The Guardian in March 2026 documented the production effort behind his skits, including a dedicated crew, rehearsals, cameras and substantial planning. What audiences may consume in a few minutes is often the result of considerable creative and technical labour.

This does not mean talented people cannot be controversial, or that public figures should avoid difficult conversations. Challenging established norms, expressing unpopular views and questioning societal expectations can be valuable forms of public engagement.

The concern arises when provocation becomes the primary product and the pursuit of attention begins to overshadow the work itself.

There is also a cost to constantly performing for public reactions. Creators become expected to produce something more shocking, more dramatic or more divisive to maintain the attention they have attracted. Eventually, the personality risks becoming trapped in the very image that made them popular.

For audiences, the question is equally important. Every view, comment and repost contributes to the attention surrounding a personality. While criticism is necessary, repeatedly amplifying content simply because it is outrageous can unintentionally reward the behaviour being criticised.

Ultimately, does being controversial pay better than being talented?

In the short term, controversy can offer a quicker route to public attention. It can make a name familiar and create opportunities that might otherwise take longer to secure. But attention alone is not a business model, and notoriety is not necessarily a measure of achievement.

A viral moment can introduce someone to the public. Talent, credibility and consistent work give the public a reason to return.

Perhaps the real question is not why controversy attracts so much attention, but why an entertainment culture increasingly finds it easier to

celebrate the spectacle than recognise the work behind it.
