Following the rising security challenges confronting Nigeria, a security expert, Dr Ibrahim Ajia, has called on political actors to suspend their 2027 political aspirations by uniting for the nation’s security and the safety of innocent citizens.
Ajia, who made the call in an interview with LEADERSHIP, noted that, “It is only when we have a peaceful and secure Nigeria that we can talk about 2027 and beyond. Let us first rescue this country before thinking of who gets what in the next election.”
He warned that Nigeria is being consumed by insecurity, stressing that leaders must set aside personal ambitions, unite, and tackle the crisis.
The Ilorin-born retired police officer also condemned the worsening security situation in Kwara State and across Nigeria, following the recent attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti local government area of the State.
He described the incessant security breaches in Kwara and other parts of Nigeria as “ugly, shameful, and a direct assault on the collective peace and dignity of the Nigerian people.”
Ajia stressed that the time has come for the federal government to urgently embrace and properly structure community policing, saying it is “no longer an option but a national emergency.”
He opined that community policing must be backed by clear policy initiatives, adequate infrastructure, and effective collaboration amongst traditional institutions, local vigilante groups and security agencies to ensure effective grassroots intelligence and prompt response to threats.
