Insecurity Fast Becoming Nigeria’s New Normal — Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has warned that insecurity is gradually being normalised in Nigeria, following deadly explosions in Maiduguri.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, Obi said the apparent lack of strong national outrage over recurring attacks signals a dangerous trend where violence is no longer met with the urgency it deserves.

In a statement posted on his X handle, Obi lamented that the explosions, which reportedly killed several people and injured over 100 others, underscore the worsening security situation in the country.

“The silence from our nation in response to such atrocities indicates a disturbing normalization of insecurity rather than a decisive confrontation with the issue,” he said.

He noted that the attacks, which occurred in vulnerable locations including markets and areas near hospitals, reflect how far the country has drifted from the fundamental responsibility of government to protect lives and property.

“The nation is once again engulfed in grief and outrage following the horrific explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State, yesterday,” Obi added.

“These tragic events serve as a painful reminder of how far we have strayed from the fundamental duty of governance: the protection of lives and property.”

Obi also drew attention to a pattern of violent incidents across several states, including Kwara State, Nasarawa State, Kogi State, Plateau State, Sokoto State and Benue State, as well as incidents within the Federal Capital Territory.

He expressed condolences to families of victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, stressing the need for urgent and decisive action to address the country’s deepening security crisis.
