The brown carton looked like an ordinary package of Indomie noodles, the type commonly found in markets across Gusau and Anka in Zamfara State. But a search by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) revealed a collection of suspected illicit drugs hidden inside.

The carton contained 50 sachets of Lara Tramadol, two packs of methamphetamine, popularly known as Ice, 1,000 tablets of Diazepam (D5) and two tied parcels of cannabis.

The discovery was made at about 11:30am on October 18, when NSCDC operatives intercepted a 24-year-old commercial driver at a checkpoint in Anka Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest, according to the command, offers another glimpse into the movement of illicit drugs through rural communities in the North-West, where security agencies are battling banditry and other forms of criminality.

Suspect Claims He Collected Parcel From Union Member

The NSCDC spokesperson in Zamfara State, ASCI Umar Mohammad M., said the suspect, Abdulraheed Abdullahi, an indigene of Bagega village in Anka LGA, was arrested during a stop-and-search operation.

“He concealed the suspected hard substances in an Indomie noodles carton. Upon interrogation, he claimed he collected the parcel from a union member who is currently at large,” Mohammad said in a statement issued on Thursday in Gusau.

The command did not identify the union member or disclose the destination of the parcel.

The arrest comes amid wider concerns over the movement of illicit drugs through communities in the North-West. However, the circumstances of the latest seizure and the suspect’s account are still subject to investigation.

Previous Seizures Raise Questions Over Drug Supply Routes

The Anka arrest follows other drug-related cases recorded by the Zamfara NSCDC Command in recent months.

On September 10, 2026, at about 11:30pm, operatives arrested a 58-year-old chemist operator, Emmanuel Okonkwo, at his shop in the Bakin Tasha area of Birnin Magaji Local Government Area.

A search of the premises reportedly led to the recovery of 112 packs of cannabis, 1,160 tablets of Exol 5, 14 sachets of Tramadol and 133 tablets of Diazepam.

According to the command, Okonkwo, who claimed to have operated a chemist for more than 20 years, confessed to working with two accomplices identified as Yellow and Sadiq. The two men were reportedly at large and operated between Kaduna and Malele village in Dansadau.

The command did not provide further details about the alleged activities of the two accomplices or the outcome of the investigation.

In another operation on October 15, the corps arrested a suspected human trafficker, Bala Abubakar, 25, in the Lalan area of Gusau and rescued two 13-year-old girls allegedly being trafficked from Shinkafi to Suleja, Niger State.

The case was also linked by intelligence to routes allegedly associated with drug inducement, although further details establishing the connection were not provided.

Meanwhile, nationwide seizures by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have highlighted the scale of the illicit drug trade. In October, the agency reportedly intercepted 8,725 kilogrammes of Tramadol powder valued at more than ₦6.98 billion at Apapa Port, as well as 55 kilogrammes of Canadian Loud at Tin Can Port.

The seizures point to continuing efforts by security agencies to intercept illicit substances entering and moving within the country.

NSCDC To Transfer Suspect To NDLEA

Following the arrest in Anka, the suspect and the recovered exhibits were transferred to the NSCDC State Command Headquarters in Gusau for discreet investigation.

The State Commandant, CC Sani Mustapha, directed that the suspect and the exhibits be handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The command said the transfer was in line with cooperation between security agencies. A similar procedure was followed in the Birnin Magaji case, in which the suspect was also handed over to the NDLEA.

The outcome of the investigations is expected to establish the source and intended destination of the suspected drugs, as well as whether other individuals were involved in their movement.

Drug Trafficking And Insecurity

The relationship between illicit drugs and insecurity has remained a concern for security agencies operating in Zamfara and other parts of the North-West.

Security officials and analysts have raised concerns about the possible use of substances such as Tramadol and Diazepam by armed groups, while proceeds from the illicit drug trade may support other criminal activities. However, the extent to which the substances recovered in the Anka operation were connected to banditry has not been established.

The interception nevertheless highlights the role of checkpoint operations and intelligence gathering in detecting suspected illicit drug consignments moving through rural communities.

For the NSCDC, whose responsibilities include protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, the operation forms part of its broader efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.

Reaffirming the corps’ position, Mohammad said the command, under the leadership of Commandant-General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, maintained zero tolerance for criminality.

“The Corps is committed to ridding the state of all criminal activities. We will continue to work with sister agencies and the public to ensure Zamfara is safe,” he said.

The command has also intensified checkpoint operations, intelligence gathering and community engagement, particularly along the Gusau-Anka-Bagega and Gusau-Dansadau corridors, which it identifies as important transit routes.

Investigation Continues

The Anka seizure has resulted in the arrest of one suspected courier, while the person who allegedly handed him the parcel remains at large, according to the NSCDC.

Investigators will need to establish the ownership of the recovered substances, the intended recipient and whether the consignment was connected to a wider trafficking network.

Until those questions are answered, the seizure remains an important lead in the investigation rather than proof of a direct link between the recovered drugs and banditry.

For security agencies operating in Zamfara, the challenge extends beyond intercepting individual consignments to identifying the people who supply, transport and distribute illicit substances across the state.
