The Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement (AIPLA), in partnership with the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN-Nigeria) and Womanifesto, will hold the Beijing+30 Women’s Summit on December 9, 2025, to mark the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.

The organisers said the summit, coming up 30 years after the 1995 Beijing International Women’s Conference, will review progress, challenges and outstanding commitments under the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

In a statement issued by the summit organisers gave the theme as “Beijing+30 Women’s Summit – Holding the Line for Women’s Rights: Looking Back and Marching Forward.”

It aims to strengthen women’s movements in Nigeria and promote intergenerational engagement on feminist and rights-based issues.

The co-founder of the Amandla Institute, Erelu Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, chair of AWLN-Nigeria, Prof. Funmilayo Para-Mallam and Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi of Womanifesto will deliver welcome remarks and set the tone for the discussions.

Goodwill messages from selected leaders and experts will follow, ahead of two panel sessions focused on women’s rights, gender-based abuses and violence in Nigeria.

The organisers said African women played a significant role in shaping the agenda of the 1995 Beijing Conference, and that many countries in the continent have made notable gains through legal and constitutional reforms.

“Examples include Rwanda’s 61.3% female parliamentary representation, Senegal’s 50/50 parity law, Sierra Leone’s 30% affirmative action legislation, and Uganda’s constitutionally guaranteed seats for women. Despite this progress across the continent, gender gaps in access to resources, representation and opportunities remain wide in Nigeria. Women make up a significant proportion of the rural workforce but continue to face limited access to land and other assets.

“The summit aims to reinforce the relevance of the 1995 Beijing outcomes, improve coordination among women’s organisations, renew advocacy efforts and strengthen mentorship networks connecting younger and more experienced women leaders across the country.’’ the statement noted.
