Ten listed companies emerged as top-performing stocks in August 2025, with most of them being insurance companies.

The others are: Mutual Benefits Assurance, AIICO Insurance, Veritas Kapital Assurance, Guinea Insurance, Regency Alliance Insurance, NCR Nigeria, Coronation Insurance, Linkage Assurance, Universal Insurance and Ellah Lakes.

Reviewing the performance, it was discovered that Mutual Benefits Assurance’s shares grew by 114.29 per cent. AIICO Insurance followed with a monthly gain of 91.47 per cent, while Veritas Kapital Assurance rose by 65.35 per cent in August.

Guinea Insurance, Regency Alliance Insurance, NCR Nigeria, Coronation Insurance, Linkage Assurance, Universal Insurance, and Ellah Lakes rose by 65.12 per cent, 63.75 per cent, 59.31 per cent, 56.71 per cent, 55.17 per cent, 53.85 per cent, and 53.09 per cent in August, respectively.

Most of the stocks are insura nce stocks as the insurance sector took the lead of the sectoral indices with a monthly gain of 44.3 per cent, following the President’s signing of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act, 2025. This signing resulted in renewed investor interest in insurance stocks, driven by expectations of sector-wide recapitalisation and regulatory-induced growth opportunities.

Meanwhile, the local equities market delivered a growth slowdown in August 2025, with the benchmark index posting a marginal gain of 0.31 per cent month-on-month (M-o-M) to close at 140,295.49 points, while the market capitalisation increased by N344.6 billion to N88.8 trillion.

Looking ahead into September, Cowry Assets Management Limited said, “we expect the market to remain characterised by cautious optimism, shaped by both domestic and external factors. The anticipated release of the August CPI figures will be keenly watched on the domestic front, as inflation dynamics continue to weigh heavily on monetary policy expectations and fixed-income yields.

“Portfolio rotation and bargain hunting are likely to remain the key themes, with investors selectively buying into undervalued names following recent corrections.”
