The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has warned that congestion looms at the $1.5 billion Lekki Deep Seaport without intermodal transport infrastructure.

LEADERSHIP recalls that the billion-dollar Lekki Deep Seaport, which was constructed by China was anticipated to reduce congestion at ports across the country.

So far, since the commencement of the seaport, the only mode of cargo evacuation has been the road, which Marítime experts have termed ineffective.

Also, the Shippers’ Council said instead of reducing congestion across ports in the country, the port itself may experience congestion due to only one more cargo evacuation from the facility

Speaking at the 2025 Intermodal Transport System Annual Roundtable in Lagos, the executive secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr Akutah Pius, stressed the importance of developing intermodal transportation infrastructure at the Lekki Sea Port.

Dr. Akutah who was represented by the director Inland Transport Services Department, Alhaji Mustapha Zubairu, warned that without complementary transportation modes, the port may face congestion similar to the Apapa Sea Port.
