Tangerines are a nutrient-rich citrus fruit that may provide numerous benefits to your health. They are packed with antioxidants, which may support immunity, provide cancer-fighting properties, and improve brain, skin, and heart health. Tangerines are also sweet and refreshing and can be enjoyed in numerous dishes.

Although, it can be grown anywhere, however, tangerine is mostly grown in Benue, Nassarawa, Kogi and Taraba and Edo states are some of the biggest producers of tangerine in Nigeria.

As Tangerine oil is known for its antifungal and antiseptic properties, making it a popular ingredient in skincare formulas, and since it is excellent remedy for acne and skin impurities, investing in its farming is profitable.

Tangerine is rich in Vitamin C and folate, which contain antioxidant substances useful for medicinal functions, as such, embarking on this farming will give one more revenue.

Another beautiful aspect of it is that, one can go into the farming as part time or engage labourers and managers to manage the farm.

Although, it can be grown anywhere, however, tangerine is mostly grown in Benue, Nassarawa, Kogi, Taraba and Edo states.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP Weekend, Mr Adeyemi Adewale, civil servant who is into farming as his secondary occupation after closing from office job or spending time after office job in Ondo State noted that, tangerine farming can be placed under as agribusiness.

It can be planted between May and June or September and October. For optimal growth, apply manure or fertilizer twice a year in June and October.

To Adewale, “One should irrigate when using a dry land because tangerines are very sensitive to waterlogged soil. The plants dislike root disturbance and so should be placed into their permanent positions when young. If growing them in pots, great care must be exercised when putting them into larger containers.

“More so, a tangerine farm is a lifetime investment since tangerine trees can keep producing fruits for as much as 30 years. Moreover he explained that Tangerine tree will take about three to four years to bear fruit.”

For small scale or personal level, tangerine can be planted within one’s compound while for commercial purpose, one will need large land for planting.

With N500 only, one can embark on farming with many planting, and when grown, it can yield about  N200,000 or more per season.
