Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, has described the ongoing political fight between Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as shameful, insisting that Fubara owed his political rise to Wike and should not be challenging the latter’s influence.
Fayose made the remarks during an exclusive interview on ARISE News breakfast show on Tuesday, where he faulted Fubara’s resistance to Wike’s continued dominance in Rivers State politics, urging the governor to embrace humility.
“It is shameful for Fubara to be struggling with Wike.
“Nobody can sack Wike from Rivers politics just like nobody can sack me from Ekiti politics,” Fayose said.
Drawing from his personal experience as a former governor, Fayose argued that holding public office should not prevent a leader from deferring to political elders and benefactors.
“As a governor, I was prostrating for people older than me,” he said. “What does it take away from you?”
Fayose dismissed arguments over who controls the political structure in Rivers State, saying Fubara should not be bothered if Wike publicly claims leadership of the state’s political space.
“Even if Wike says he is the leader, Fubara should not be arguing with him,” Fayose said. “Who knew Fubara three years ago?”
He further revealed that Wike was instrumental to Fubara’s emergence as governor, recounting a conversation that underscored Wike’s decisive role in the succession process.
“I was supporting Austin Okpara. Wike told me, ‘I know where you are going, but I am not going that way with you. I am supporting Fubara’,” Fayose recalled.
According to Fayose, that decision ultimately shaped the outcome of the governorship race, describing Fubara at the time as “a governor in the making.”
“Wike made Fubara,” Fayose declared.
