AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has called for greater commitment from governments, policymakers and communities to create opportunities and support systems for women and girls.
The organisation made the call in Abuja while marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, stating that the celebration is an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women while intensifying efforts to address barriers to health, equality and economic opportunities.
AHF Nigeria said it would commemorate the event on March 9 across its operational states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa.
According to the organisation, women and girls remain disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where they account for more than 60 per cent of new infections.
It noted that gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare, restrictions on reproductive rights, income inequality and inadequate educational opportunities continue to widen disparities affecting women and girls globally.
The organisation also highlighted the lack of access to affordable menstrual hygiene products and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education as key factors limiting the dignity, mobility and opportunities of millions of girls.
As part of its activities for IWD 2026, AHF Nigeria will organise a Continuous Medical Education (CME) programme for healthcare workers across more than 156 health facilities where the organisation provides services in its seven states of operation.
The training, according to the organisation, will focus on the gender dimensions of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and strategies for supporting women, particularly those in rural communities, to improve their health and livelihoods.
Country Programme Director of AHF Nigeria, Echey Ijezie, said the organisation remains committed to programmes that prioritise women and girls.
“AHF Nigeria places enormous value on women and girls in society, which is why our programmes are anchored on improving their wellbeing. We will continue to prioritise issues affecting women while calling on leaders, policymakers and communities to translate their commitments into concrete action,” he said.
AHF added that it will continue to advocate policies that protect and empower women and girls, including efforts to expand access to HIV/AIDS services, distribute free menstrual hygiene products and combat gender-based violence.
The organisation urged stakeholders to turn commitments into action in line with the theme of this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain.”
