The chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, has pledged to enhance the involvement of women in governance.
Maikalangu made this commitment in commemoration of the celebration of International Women’s Day in Abuja.
He emphasised that gender equity will remain a top priority for his administration in the coming years.
“Our administration has facilitated the appointment of numerous women to my cabinet, and currently, many heads of departments within the council are women,” he said.
He further mentioned that he has appointed women to various key positions, including Special Adviser for Women Affairs, Consultant on Development Partners and ICT, as well as Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants.
Reflecting on the significance of International Women’s Day, which began in 1911, Maikalangu highlighted that the observance aims to celebrate the economic, social, and cultural achievements of women around the world.
“Despite the progress achieved by women in education, healthcare, sports, entrepreneurship, and leadership, many still face violence and discrimination in various aspects of life.
“It is time for us to work diligently to dismantle these barriers and ensure that all women, regardless of their backgrounds, have the opportunity to realize their full potential in our society,” he said.
