Against the backdrop of the high rate of exodus of Nigerian professionals and youth to the western world to seek greener pastures, which is colloquially referred to as ‘Japa’ (Run Away) in Nigeria, a Nigerian residing in United Kingdom (UK), Kehinde Yekeen Agboluaje, has claimed that higher academic degrees like Master’s were useless in the UK.

He said that apart from the high cost of earning higher degrees in the UK, which costs up to £15,000 or about N30million, in several job interviews he had attended, there was nowhere the prospective employers ever asked whether he was a graduate or not, saying what they requested was his ‘training certificate’ relevant to the job he applied for.

Agboluaje, who took to his Facebook page to share his experience on Saturday, therefore, challenged the Federal Government of Nigeria to ‘stop wasting’ resources in establishing new universities, but rather invest the resources in vocational schools that are well equipped to train Nigerians to be self-employed and ultimately contribute to the nation’s economic development.

Agboluaje wrote: “I was discussing with one of my friends and he asked me when am I starting my M.Sc since my wife had finished hers and I laughed. He said why are you laughing? I responded that to do M.Sc in UK, it cost nothing less than £15k equivalent to 30million Naira, where would I see that money? If I start today, my working hours will reduce, 80% of responsibilities will have to come from my wife, abi you want me to lose being a man? Master that’s very useless in the environment we are😀😀😀

“I have attended several job interviews, there is no where they requested either you are a graduate or not, what they requested is, what training certificate did you have that relevant to the job you applied to. I have done several training certificates and I am still doing it.

“I have studied this environment and I got to know they don’t value university education as such, so why did I have to waste such amount of money when Buoda Yinka Afonja has given me several business ideas that one can invest and enjoy life.

“Why am I posting this?

“Dear Nigeria government, stop wasting our resources in establishing new universities, invest our resources in vocational schools that’s well equipped to train people to be self employed and contribute to economy buoyancy of our country.”
