The event, which drew participants from across the country and was broadcast widely through mass media, showcased the remarkable progress in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, leaving attendees and viewers alike in awe of the achievements on display.

The celebration not only highlighted the success of Jigawa State’s wheat farming initiatives but also reinforced the confidence of policymakers, farmers, and patriotic Nigerians in the nation’s ability to achieve food security and sustainable development.

The event served as a testament to what can be accomplished through solid partnerships, commitment, and the collective efforts of critical stakeholders.

In collaboration with the Flour Mills Association of Nigeria (FMAN) and the Jigawa State government, the federal government has successfully cultivated over 80,000 hectares of wheat in this 2025 season.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s food self-sufficiency and economic stability quest.
Recounting the journey, the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, revealed that during the 2023/2024 wheat production season, the Federal Government supported the cultivation of 40,000 hectares of wheat in Jigawa State. The state government and other partners contributed an additional 15,000 hectares, resulting in a total production of over 55,000 hectares.

In that year, the timely provision of inputs at subsidized prices, coupled with the commitment and resilience of the farmers, led to a bumper harvest,” Hon. Kyari stated.

Building on this success, the federal government increased its intervention and support to 60,000 hectares for the 2024/2025 season, while the state and other partners covered an additional 20,000 hectares, bringing the total to 80,000 hectares.

Today, Jigawa is celebrating the cultivation of over 80,000 hectares of wheat, with more than 160,000 farmers supported through subsidized agricultural inputs

In recognition of Jigawa State’s remarkable contributions to national food security, the Federal Government donated 10,000 water pump generators, 10,000 sprayers, 10,000 litres of insecticide, 10,000 litres of agro-fertiliser, and 10,000 litres of herbicides for free distribution to farmers. This gesture is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes agricultural development as a cornerstone of national growth.

Hon. Kyari praised the Jigawa State government and its farmers for their dedication, describing the state as a “reliable partner” in the quest for food self-sufficiency. He emphasized that the achievements in Jigawa State serve as a model for other states to emulate, demonstrating the power of collaboration and shared vision.
In his address at the event, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, which he described as the backbone of the state’s economy and a critical driver of national food security.

Governor Namadi expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Renewed Hope Agenda, which has spurred ground-breaking agricultural innovations and milestones across the country. He also thanked the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the Flour Mills Association of Nigeria, and other partners for their unwavering support.

“We assure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our esteemed Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, the Flour Mills Association of Nigeria (FMAN), and other partners of our commitment to enhancing wheat production and other crops for national growth and development,” Governor Namadi declared.

The governor outlined an ambitious plan to expand wheat production in Jigawa State to 500,000 hectares by 2030. “We are targeting to grow our wheat production to 500,000 hectares by 2030, and we will partner with any potential collaborators to achieve this goal,

Jigawa State has equally been doing well in the area of Rice production, in 2024, the state farmers produced over 1.6 million metric tons

The state government has equally gone far in preparation for the 2025 Dry season rice farming, the sum ₦8,268,225,000.00 as a 30% advance down-payment for input costs to 58,500

The loans will support the farmers in cultivating 50,000 hectares of rice in 1,000 clusters across key rice-producing areas. The loan is expected to be repaid after the harvest period.

The success of Jigawa State’s wheat farming initiatives is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination, collaboration, and a shared vision for a better future.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of food insecurity, Jigawa State’s achievements offer a beacon of hope and a roadmap for other states to follow.

The Wheat Farmers Green Field Celebration in Dabi Village not only celebrated the hard work and resilience of Jigawa State’s farmers but also reaffirmed the nation’s collective resolve to achieve food security and sustainable development.

With the support of the Federal Government, private sector partners, and the unwavering commitment of farmers, Nigeria is well on its way to becoming a self-sufficient and food-secure nation.

As Hon. Abubakar Kyari aptly put it, “What is taking place in Jigawa State is a classic example of what can be achieved through solid partnership and commitment by critical stakeholders.” Indeed, Jigawa State has transitioned from being a pivotal player to a reliable partner in Nigeria’s journey toward food security and economic prosperity.
