The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Jigawa State chapter, has elected new executive members to preside over its affairs for the next three years.
The election of the new state executives was conducted during the NUT Jigawa State chapter’s 8th Triennial Delegates Conference, held in Dutse, the state capital.
Speaking during the opening session of the conference, the national president of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Comrade Titus Audi Amba, stated that the union was founded on democratic principles and the philosophy of labour unions.
According to him, in line with this, the union at the national, state and local levels conducts elections to usher in new executives at the end of every stipulated tenure. Consequently, the election for the new executive members of the Jigawa State wing was due to be held this December.
Comrade Amba reiterated the union’s commitment to continue pursuing better welfare and improved conditions for teaching and learning in Nigeria.
The outgoing NUT chairman, Comrade Abdulkadir Yunusa, said the union had worked tirelessly with the state government to reposition teaching and learning.
He noted that during his tenure, they worked as partners and collaborators with the state government. This approach resulted in the full implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage, payment of arrears, gratuity, pensions, and other entitlements as and when due.
“Many policies and initiatives were implemented in collaboration with the state and partners, which evidently resulted in the improvement of learning outcomes in the state. I urge the incoming executive to learn from our successes and, where we had gaps, to strategise for more progress,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Comrade Dauda Alhaji Shuaibu, promised to work with all members and stakeholders to reposition the union to better serve the welfare of its members and to safeguard the integrity, dignity, and professionalism of the teaching profession in the state.
Other newly elected executive members include Auwal Sabo as deputy chairman, Auwal Magaji 1st vice chairman, Masudu Ismail 2nd vice chairman, Muawiya 3rd vice chairman, Isah Muhammad 4th vice chairman, Aminu Hafiz 1st internal auditor, Lawan Ilu 2nd auditor and Zakar Shehu publicity secretary.
