The Jigawa State Government has been awarded an excellence award for improving its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by over 200 per cent in two years.
According to a 2024 report, the state now ranks third highest in IGR growth in the Northwest and 14th among all Nigerian states. It grew from N27.54 billion in 2023 to N62.60 billion in 2024.
The Excellence Award was presented by Revenue Generation Magazine, a media outlet specialising in in-depth analysis and reporting on revenue generation in public and private organisations.
While presenting the award to the executive chairman of the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Nasiru Sabo, the publisher of the Magazine and chief executive officer of Alford Conference Ltd., Mr. Frederick Apeji, stated that the recognition was in appreciation of the state’s efforts, which have yielded significant results in boosting its IGR.
Mr. Frederick noted that Jigawa State has demonstrated exemplary initiatives in IGR administration, setting a standard worthy of emulation by others.
“Improving revenue generation means unlocking more resources for infrastructure development and efficient public service delivery that are key factors in achieving meaningful progress in human welfare, economic growth, and sustainable development,” he said.
“We therefore chose to honour and recognize such efforts with this Excellence Award—not only to appreciate the achievement but also to encourage administrators to strive for even greater success,” Mr. Frederick added.
In response, the executive chairman of the Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Nasiru Sabo, expressed gratitude for the award, stating that it was more than just a symbolic gesture but a motivation to redouble efforts in sustaining the progress made.
Dr. Nasiru explained that boosting internal revenue is one of the 12 point agendas of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s administration. Over the past two years, the sector has undergone a significant transformation, leading to the witnessed positive outcomes.
“We introduced several initiatives, including the Jigawa Enlightenment and Engagement Tax Team (JEETT) and the Jigawa Integrated Tax Administration System (JIGTAS), which have enhanced revenue collection, eliminated multiple taxation, and blocked leakages,” Dr. Nasiru stated.
