The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the disbursement of N813 million to the over 210 victims of the Majiya tanker explosion in October 2024.

The state commissioner for information, youth, sport, and culture, Hon Sagir Musa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council’s meeting.

He stated that the Majiya Committee has been directed to commence the disbursement as soon as possible to the families of 201 deceased victims and over 70 survivors who sustained varying degrees of injury in the accident.

According to the commissioner, N850 million has been redeemed from the over N1.6 billion pledged by individuals, groups, and public organisations to assist the victims. The committee was urged to intensify efforts to recover the remaining pledges as distribution begins.

The committee, set up to investigate the 15th October tanker explosion that occurred in Majiya Town, Jigawa State, under the chairmanship of DIG Hafiz M. Inuwa (rtd), revealed that the incident affected 308 people, with 209 confirmed dead and 99 survivors sustaining various injuries the commissioner explained.

Additionally, the council approved N15 billion for “Jigawa UNITE,” a project initiated in collaboration with a UK-based firm to deploy ICT solutions to improve teaching and learning in the state’s basic education sector and ensure better learning outcomes.
