Emmy-winning filmmaker Joel Kachi Benson is set to return to Nigerian cinemas with Mothers of Chibok. This feature-length documentary shifts attention from the 2014 abduction to the resilience of the women who continue to fight for justice. The film, backed by Nollywood veteran Joke Silva as executive producer, will premiere in cinemas across Nigeria and Ghana on February 27.
Rather than retelling the events of the Chibok school attack, the documentary follows the everyday lives of the mothers left behind, capturing their struggles to rebuild amid insecurity while supporting the education of their remaining children. The project explores grief, endurance and community strength more than a decade after the tragedy that sparked the global #BringBackOurGirls movement.
Speaking about her involvement, Silva said the film highlights stories often overlooked in public conversations about the abduction, noting that the emotional and economic journeys of the mothers remain largely unseen. Benson described the documentary as a continuation of his earlier work, Daughters of Chibok, expanding the narrative beyond the moment of crisis to focus on long-term survival and resilience.
