Julius Berger Nigeria PLC has intensified extensive rehabilitation works on major Lagos bridges as part of the Federal Ministry of Works contract aimed at correcting long-standing structural defects and restoring critical transport infrastructure.
The intervention, which began in January 2024 after the company’s 2023 engagement, covers key structures, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, the Iddo Bridge, and the Iddo Bridge Underpass.
The works are focused on addressing severe deterioration caused by marine corrosion, tidal forces, ageing infrastructure, and prolonged heavy traffic loading.
In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, the company said at Carter Bridge, rehabilitation has largely been completed, with major repairs carried out on underwater and substructure elements affected by corrosion and tidal movement. The project has now entered its close-out phase.
It added that on the Third Mainland Bridge, structural rehabilitation is ongoing on critical components, including the deck soffit, piers, and underwater pile caps. The project is about 80 per cent physically complete, with the remaining phase focused on a one-year monitoring and performance validation exercise currently in its third month. Engineers note that no major construction work remains, as attention has shifted to ensuring long-term structural safety and durability.
The firm added that Iddo Bridge is undergoing more extensive reconstruction due to severe structural failure. Portions of the bridge have been demolished and rebuilt using reinforced concrete girders, upgraded reinforcement systems, and strengthened supports. The project is currently at about 30 per cent completion.
Similarly, the Iddo Bridge Underpass has been fully demolished to allow complete reconstruction. The scope includes Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), improved drainage systems, and modern street lighting and utility installations.
Progress on the underpass stands at about 38 per cent.
When completed, the rehabilitation programme is expected to improve structural integrity, enhance commuter safety, reduce travel risks, and ease traffic congestion across some of Lagos State’s busiest transport corridors.
