A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has declared the composition of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KASIEC) as null and void.

The court said the electoral body’s chairman, Sani Lawan, and other members of the Commission were unfit for the office being card-carrying members of the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the State.

In his ruling on Tuesday, the presiding Judge, Justice Simon Amobeda, said the composition of KASIEC was made in contravention of constitutional provisions of Section 197 (1) (b) and sSction 200 (1) (a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 4 of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2001, as such, they cannot validly and competently conduct the October 26 local government elections for the 44 LGAs in the State until qualified persons are duly appointed based on the provisions of the law.
