Bayelsa State deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa on Thursday after suddenly collapsing in his office at the Government House, is said to be in a critical condition.
The incident happened around 1:30 pm, causing panic among Government House staff. Security aides and workers immediately rushed him to the hospital, where doctors attended to him at the emergency unit before moving him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for closer medical attention.
A media aide to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Doubara Atasi, confirmed the incident and said that his principal was in critical condition and receiving treatment.
He noted that the cause of his illness has not yet been officially determined.
Sources within the Government House said Ewhrudjakpo had been under a tight work schedule in recent weeks, but stressed that only the medical team could confirm what triggered the collapse.
A close-by resident who witnessed the arrival of the convoy at FMC said the urgency made it clear that something was wrong.
“It’s true. I saw how fast they drove in. It’s well with him,” he said.
The Bayelsa State governor, Douye Diri, is yet to release an official statement on his deputy’s current condition, but early indications showed he has been stabilised as doctors continued to monitori his condition.
