Burial rites for Joel Adesiyan Adegboye, the school teacher killed during last week’s coordinated attack on three schools in Oriire local government area of Oyo State, began this Friday afternoon, at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso.

Adegboye, aged 49, was shot dead during the attack carried out by suspected bandits last Friday. He is expected to be laid to rest later on Friday at his residence in the Owolaake area of Ogbomoso.

Today marks a week since the schools were attacked and students and teachers killed with others kidnapped. Many of the victims are minors with ages ranging between two, and five. None of them has been rescued yet.

The slain teacher, born on December 11, 1976, was among the victims of the violent invasion of Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, which occurred around 9:30am on the fateful day.

The attacks, which targeted the three schools simultaneously, led to the abduction of several teachers and students, throwing the Oriire community into panic.

Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, visited the affected communities on Saturday and ordered the deployment of additional detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja to support ongoing rescue efforts.

According to the police authorities, the reinforcement was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the joint security team working to secure the release of the abducted victims.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier disclosed that seven students were kidnapped from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were abducted from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School.

The governor also confirmed that one person was killed during the attacks.

The incident sparked fear across Ogbomosoland and neighbouring communities, prompting many parents to hurriedly withdraw their children from schools over concerns about possible fresh attacks.

Some schools reportedly shut down temporarily amid rumours that bandits had infiltrated Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), claims later dismissed by the institution’s management as false.
