After a backlash following the presidential pardon granted to Maryam Sanda, sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 for the killing of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, President Bola Tinubu has revoked the pardon and reversed her death sentence to 12 years.

This was revealed in an updated official gazette released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday.

According to the gazette, Sanda, who had already spent six years and eight months at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State, got the new approved term on compassionate grounds. Consequently, she is now to spend remaining five years and fours in jail before her eventual freedom.

In the additional list released by the Presidency, Maryam Sanda’s death sentence was commuted to 12 years imprisonment, leaving her with just less than six years to go.

Also, more than 80 various offenders returned in the updated list with their jail terms commuted to lesser periods in prison.
