President Bola Tinubu is holding talks with the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (Rtd), at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday afternoon.
Vice Admiral Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, arrived at the State House at about 12:50 pm for the meeting, which comes just hours after the president imposed a state of emergency on the oil-rich state over prolonged political and security crises.
LEADERSHIP reports that Tinubu had on Tuesday night declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing a prolonged political crisis that has disrupted governance and threatened security.
As part of the measures, he suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the State’s House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
In their place, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibas as sole administrator, with a mandate to oversee governance but not to enact new laws.
The president emphasised that the State’s judiciary would continue to function independently.
