President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate, seeking the screening and subsequent confirmation of the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Service Chiefs.
The President’s letter was read on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, at the plenary.
According to the letter, the Service Chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye
Akpabio, thereafter, referred the nominations to the Senate Committee of the Whole for screening and subsequent confirmation of the nominees next week.
The development followed a major shake-up in the military hierarchy a few days ago, during which President Tinubu removed General Christopher Musa and appointed General Olufemi Oluyede, a former Chief of Army Staff, as the new CDS.
Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, however, retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
According to presidential aide Sunday Dare, the reshuffle was part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
“All appointments take immediate effect,” Dare stated.
