The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kaduna State Chapter, has called on the government to stop what it called the sustained persecution, harassment, and politically-motivated actions directed at former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition leaders in the state and across the country.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna on Tuesday, former state commissioner for education, Prof. Sani Bello, who spoke on behalf of the state ADC leaders called for the unconditional respect for the rule of law, including adherence to due process and judicial integrity.

Bello demanded an end to the misuse of security and anti-corruption agencies for partisan objectives.

According to ADC leaders, they demanded restoration of democratic norms, including political freedom, party autonomy, and institutional neutrality.

He stated, “This statement follows a critical review of recent developments, which collectively indicate a troubling pattern of abuse of state institutions, disregard for due process, and erosion of democratic norms.

“In light of the foregoing, the Leadership of the ADC Kaduna State hereby demands: The immediate cessation of all forms of harassment, intimidation, and politically motivated prosecution of Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai and other opposition figures. The immediate release of all individuals unlawfully detained or the institution of transparent and fair legal proceedings.”

Bello added, “Democracy thrives on the existence of a vibrant opposition, respect for fundamental human rights, and the impartial application of justice.
