Veteran Nollywood actor, Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has called for stricter safety protocols for actors using firearms on movie sets following the fatal shooting of a singer in Delta State.
The actor’s call follows the death of Oghenemine Million Ogidi, an upcoming singer who was allegedly killed by a police officer, Usman Nuhu, at a terminal in Delta State. The incident, captured in a viral video, has triggered widespread condemnation.
In a video message shared on his Instagram page, Kanayo, who is currently filming in Delta State, expressed concern over the safety of entertainers who frequently handle both real and imitation firearms during film productions.
He urged colleagues and production houses to ensure they obtain the necessary police permits and licenses for all props and firearms used on location. According to the veteran actor, carrying valid documentation is essential to prevent tragic misunderstandings during encounters with law enforcement.
“Actors are not safe if we do not follow proper protocols. Those who use these firearms must ensure they have legitimate licenses and always carry them to movie locations,” Kanayo stated.
Addressing the Inspector General of Police, the actor described the killing of the young singer as a heinous act and demanded that the officer involved face the full weight of the law. He argued that the incident amounted to murder and required a punishment that would serve as a deterrent to others.
The Delta State Police Command has since ordered the arrest of the officer involved, while human rights activists continue to demand a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
