Yobe State Governor, Hon Mai Mala Buni, has called for a cultural renaissance in the historic Kanem-Borno region as a pathway to promoting peace, unity and regional stability across the North-East and neighbouring countries.
A statement issued by the director general Press Affairs and Media to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed said Buni made the call while addressing dignitaries and participants at a cultural celebration attended by high-ranking personalities from across Nigeria as well as Niger, Chad ad Cameroon Republics.
The governor stated that the gathering symbolised a reawakening of the rich civilisation and cultural heritage of the ancient Kanem-Borno Empire, one of Africa’s oldest and longest-lasting empires.
Buni further said the programme goes beyond reviving traditions and customs but serving as a bridge between the past and the present, and between older and younger generations, with peace and stability as its ultimate goal.
“As the theme Harnessing Culture for Peace and Regional Stability suggests, events such as this present a unique opportunity to deploy our cultural heritage for value reorientation, self-development and societal growth,” Buni said.
The governor noted that the occasion also serves as a reminder of the moral duties of leadership, the responsibilities of parents, and the need for discipline among youths being groomed for future leadership roles.
Governor Buni recalled that Kanem-Borno was renowned for Qur’anic memorisation and Islamic education, making it a major centre of learning in West Africa, while also excelling in trade and agriculture.
“The teachings of Islam and the virtues of our culture preach peace and peaceful coexistence. By this, we are expected to be symbols and reflections of peace. The people of Kanem-Borno should be role models of harmony,” he said.
The governor expressed concern that over time, the region had lost its strong sense of communality and the spirit of brotherhood for which it was known, lamenting the decline of collective responsibility in raising children.
