The Kano State Government has approved N21.29 billion for the rehabilitation of major water infrastructure to tackle persistent shortages affecting residents across the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, granted the approval, according to a statement issued by the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dahir Muhammad Hashim.

Hashim described the intervention as “one of the most substantial investments in the water sector in recent years,” stressing that it is both urgent and necessary to reverse declining water supply.

He said the projects would focus on critical facilities, including the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants, as well as the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

A breakdown of the projects shows that N9.9 billion has been allocated for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of its raw water pump station, while N11.39 billion will go toward the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station, its treatment plant, and the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

Explaining the severity of the situation, Hashim said the Tamburawa facility designed to produce 150 million litres daily is “currently operating at only about 27 percent capacity due to damage caused by flooding,” particularly affecting its pump station since 2022.

He added that the Challawa plant, which has a capacity of 220 million litres per day, “is functioning at less than 30 percent,” significantly reducing water output across the state.

“Combined, both plants were built to supply 370 million litres daily but are now delivering far below that threshold,” he said, linking the shortfall to widespread water scarcity in Kano.

The commissioner also highlighted the impact of vandalism on distribution, noting that the Goron Dutse reservoirs “have been rendered non-functional following the vandalization of critical components.”

He assured residents that the rehabilitation efforts would “restore production capacity, improve distribution efficiency, and stabilize water supply across Kano.”

While acknowledging public frustration, Hashim conveyed the governor’s commitment to resolving the crisis, stating that “with these measures, water scarcity in Kano will soon be significantly reduced and ultimately eliminated.”

He also urged residents to support government efforts by protecting public infrastructure, warning that vandalism has been a major factor in repeated service disruptions.
