Kano State House of Assembly has urged the Kano State government to direct Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to stop disconnecting power from transformers without proper notice to consumers.

This followed deliberations on the floor of the house during a plenary session yesterday presided over by the speaker Alhaji Jibril Falgore.

Hon Abubakar Tasiu, member representing Kiru constituency, who moved the motion, stressed that most transformers are purchased and maintained by individuals and communities but unfortunately, KEDCO do not adhere to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Law 2023 which stipulates 12 days’ notice before disconnection of transformers.

He said even when the transformers are bought and maintained by these communities/individuals, at the end, the company does not provide adequate electricity and in some cases, they make total disconnection of transformers in some areas.

He however argued that KEDCO has disconnected and removed between 150-170 transformers from Kiru, Bebeji, Tudun Wada, Rogo and Karaye local government areas of the state.

While highlighting how important power is to the public given the hot weather, the health implications and the growth of small-scale businesses, Tasiu however called on the state government to set up a committee that would discuss with KEDCO for possible reconnection of the affected areas and having improved power supply.

Contributing to the matter, member representing Ungoggo constituency, Aminu Sa’adu, pointed out that the motion is the 3rd of its kind as there were similar efforts during the 8th and 9th assemblies on the need for improved power supply.

He posited that the Assembly and other government ministries and agencies spend huge amounts of money on diesel due to inadequate power supply, noting that an improvement would boost commercial and economic activities in the state.

After careful deliberations, the House adopted a resolution and recommended that the state government should mandate KEDCO to avoid disconnecting transformers without notice.

In another development, the house has recommended the appointment of Lawan Badamasi as a member of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

Earlier, the House Standing Committee on Election Matters presented a report on the screening of the nominee.

The chairman of the committee Murtala Muhammad Kadage maintained that Lawan Badamasi has met all the criteria and is qualified to be appointed as a member of KANSIEC.

The House unanimously adopted and recommended the appointment of Lawan Badamasi in line with section A and D of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission KANSIEC Law 2001.
