The Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Aboki, has released 37 Goron Dutse correctional facility inmates.
According to an audio message made available to journalists by the spokesperson of the Kano state judiciary, Baba Jibo, Justice Aboki, I released them following their deteriorating health condition and awaiting trial for a long time to decongest the facility.
The audio explained that the CJ’s visit to the facility was based on the Criminal Justice Release from Custody Special Provision Act, a law that allows any state Chief Judge to visit the correctional facility from time to time to free inmates where necessary.
Justice Aboki explained that some of the inmates have fallen ill, have not been given proper medical attention, and have become very weak; as such, releasing them to their loved ones would enable them to be taken appropriate care of.
While highlighting how inadequately the inmates were fed due to the country’s economic hardship, Justice Aboki called on the Kano state government to provide food to improve their feeding and welfare at the facility.
