A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kano has remanded a 20-year-old woman, Safiya Hussaini, in a correctional facility over the alleged murder of her co-wife.
Safiya, a resident of Loko village in Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, was arraigned on Monday before Chief Magistrate Court No. 2, presided over by Magistrate Auwal Yusuf Sulaiman, on a charge of culpable homicide.
The prosecution told the court that the defendant allegedly attacked her co-wife with a cutlass following a dispute between them, inflicting injuries that resulted in the victim’s death.
The prosecuting counsel, however, informed the court that the Chief Magistrate’s Court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter because it involved a capital offence. He therefore sought an adjournment to enable the police conclude their investigation and transfer the case to a court with the appropriate jurisdiction.
Magistrate Sulaiman granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending further legal proceedings. He also directed the state’s legal officers to review the case file and take the necessary action.
The case was adjourned to 27th of July, 2026.
