Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf has disclosed that his administration inherited virtually empty government coffers, with one bank account containing just N9,000 when he assumed office, and challenged the past administration to justify its financial management.

This came during Thursday’s distribution of permanent appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers in Kano, as contained in a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, yesterday.

Governor Yusuf painted a grim picture of the state’s financial condition under the previous administration, claiming the treasury was so depleted that Kano was left indebted to banks. He attributed this to what he termed “reckless financial practices,” including the employment of over 128 tax consultants who allegedly failed to deliver tangible results.

“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury,” Yusuf declared, challenging his predecessor to justify their financial management.

The governor claimed his administration had successfully reversed the situation through prudent resource management and plugging financial leakages, stating that billions of naira are now available in government accounts.

“We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano’s money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle and we will not compromise it,” he said.

Yusuf highlighted his government’s achievements, particularly citing improved performance in the 2025 NECO SSCE examinations as evidence of effective investment in education, noting that, the appointment of 4,315 teachers demonstrates his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector.

The governor assured continued investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure while maintaining transparency and accountability despite facing opposition criticism.
