The Kano State Government has assured residents that the lingering emirship tussle rocking the state will soon be resolved through peaceful dialogue.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, gave the assurance on Thursday while briefing journalists in Kano, saying that concrete steps had been taken to restore lasting peace and stability in the state.
“The Kano emirship tussle will soon be resolved amicably because the state government is committed to dialogue with stakeholders,” Waiya stated.
He noted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration remained steadfast in its commitment to dialogue, rule of law, and respect for traditional institutions, stressing that the issue would not be allowed to generate further tension or hinder governance.
“Our approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State,” the commissioner added.
Recall that the crisis began after the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano in May 2024. His return followed the signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024 by Governor Yusuf, which dissolved the five emirates created by the previous administration and removed the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
Speaking on political developments in the state, Waiya also addressed Governor Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a strategic step that would bring “significant benefits” to Kano State.
“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, residents should expect more dividends of democracy,” he said.
According to him, the alignment with the Federal Government would attract more interventions, projects, and development initiatives across key sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare.
On the deputy governor’s refusal to defect alongside the governor, Waiya said the decision was “a personal choice,” insisting that it has not affected governance or unity within the administration.
He called on residents to remain calm and supportive as the government continued efforts to promote peace and development.
“The state government remains focused on governance, unity, and development. The interests of the Kano people will always remain paramount,” Waiya reaffirmed.
