Kano Government Lawyers Begin Indefinite Strike, Close Ministry Of Justice

Lawyers working with the Kano State Ministry of Justice have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and working condition concerns.

The legal officers, under the platform of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kano State chapter, on Wednesday morning locked the entrance to the ministry, preventing staff and visitors from accessing the premises.

The chairman of the association, Barrister Abdullahi Aminu Shamsu, had earlier announced the decision to embark on the industrial action, citing what he described as the government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting law officers in the ministry.

Shamsu said the lawyers were facing difficult working conditions and had yet to receive certain statutory allowances and other entitlements provided by law.

He noted that despite several engagements with the Kano State Government on the matter, the concerns of the law officers had remained unresolved, prompting the decision to begin an indefinite strike.

According to a notice circulated by the association announcing the industrial action, the strike, which began on March 11, 2026, was aimed at demanding improved welfare, professional dignity, better working conditions, and respect for the office of the State Counsel.

The notice also called on law officers within the ministry to unite and support the action until their demands are addressed.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ministry of Justice remained shut, with activities grounded as the lawyers insisted that the strike would continue until their grievances were resolved.

Meanwhile, the Kano State commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), said the state government had engaged the leadership of the lawyers’ association in discussions.

Maude disclosed that a meeting held on Tuesday night between the government and the association was aimed at resolving the issues, but the talks appeared to have ended without any immediate resolution.
