The Kano State Government has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for donating a total of N8 billion to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the popular Singer Market in Kano.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, on behalf of the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf.
Waiya said the state government was deeply grateful to President Tinubu for approving the release of N5 billion as an intervention fund to cushion the losses suffered by traders whose businesses were destroyed by the inferno.
He described the donation as timely and compassionate, noting that it underscored the President’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, especially in moments of distress.
The commissioner also applauded APC governors under the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) for contributing an additional N3 billion to the victims.
According to him, the gesture reflected solidarity, inclusive governance and national unity, adding that the combined N8 billion intervention was a remarkable demonstration of empathy and leadership.
The donation was earlier announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Singer Market on Monday, during which he sympathised with the victims and assured them of the Federal Government’s support.
Shettima disclosed that the N3 billion contribution from APC governors was coordinated under the leadership of the Chairman of the PGF and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.
“Kano is too big to play in the periphery. Kano is so important that we cannot afford Kano to be on the sidelines,” Shettima said.
Waiya assured that the Kano State Government would ensure transparency and accountability in the utilisation of the funds to enable affected traders to quickly return to business.
The Vice President was accompanied by top federal and state officials, as well as APC governors from Kebbi, Katsina and Sokoto states, during the visit.
