The Kano Emirate has been thrown into mourning following the death of the District Head of Dorayi and holder of the traditional title of Barde Kerarriyar, Alhaji Shehu Kabiru Bayero, who died in Egypt.

The Kano Emirate announced his death in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Tuesday.
The emirate prayed for Allah to grant the late traditional ruler eternal rest and give his family, as well as the Kano Royal House, the strength to bear the loss.

Details surrounding his death and arrangements for the return of his remains to Nigeria for burial were not disclosed in the statement.

Bayero’s death marks the passing of a traditional ruler with a long career in public service, spanning more than three decades in the Nigeria Police Force before his appointment into the Kano traditional institution.

The late district head was redeployed to the newly created District of Dorayi in 2025 by the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, after previously serving as the District Head of Gwarzo.

Before his redeployment to Gwarzo, Bayero had served as District Head of Takai Local Government Area.
His journey in the traditional institution began in 2006 when the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, appointed him Barde Kerarriya.

Before entering traditional service, Bayero had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Police Force.
He joined the force as a police constable in 1970 and rose through the ranks to become a Commissioner of Police.

During his career, he served as Commissioner of Police in Gombe and Osun states before retiring after 35 years in the force.

The late Bayero also came from a family with a long history of service within Kano’s traditional and security institutions.

His father, the late Kabiru Bayero, served as the Native Authority Police Chief before he was appointed Barde Kerarriya by the late Emir Muhammadu Sanusi I.

Kabiru Bayero was later succeeded as a local police chief by his brother, the late Emir Ado Bayero, in the 1950s.

The death of Shehu Kabiru Bayero is therefore expected to be felt across the Kano Emirate, particularly within the traditional institution and communities where he served as district head.

As of press time, the Kano Emirate had yet to announce details of his funeral arrangements or when his remains would be returned from Egypt.
