The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and illegally possessing a firearm in Panshekara Quarters of Kano metropolis.
The police also recovered an English Barreta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred on January 25, 2026, around 7:30 pm, when officers responded to a distress call.
The statement said, “Police Officers attached to Panshekara Division, Kano, responded to a distress call and found that James was mercilessly beating his mother at their residence in Panshekara Quarters, Kano”
The suspect reportedly fled the scene, but his mother handed over the pistol and ammunition, explaining, “she had discovered it in her son’s bag and refused to give it to him, leading to the violent attack.” She also expressed concern over her son’s changed behaviour following a New Year celebration.
Ididiong, who was subsequently arrested, is currently in police custody as investigations continued.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, praised the mother for her courage, saying, “The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her bravery in standing up against her son’s violent behavior.” He also cautioned parents to monitor their children’s activities and report any suspicious behaviour to the authorities.
The police command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through its emergency phone lines.
