The Kano State government says it’s making moves to address the issue of Climate Change, desertification and other environmental problems with a view to maintaining cleaner and greener environment that can stand the test of time.
The commissioner for environment and climate change, Hon. Nasiru Sule Garo, disclosed this on Thursday in Kano at a summit for the Northwest states organised by Surge Africa, a non governmental organisation.

Spokesman of the ministry, Ismail Garba Gwammaja in a statement quoted the commissioner as saying that the objective of the summit was to bring stakeholders in the area of Climate Change to brainstorm, share knowledge and ideas on how best to tackle Climate Change and reduce emissions in the environment in order to safeguard the ecosystem and by extension mitigate the issue of land degradation and desertification.
The commissioner who expressed optimism on the outcome of the meeting said a more robust documents would be presented to serve as driving tools for the process.

He highlighted some of the measures or strategies adopted by the present administration to address climate change issues which include changing the name of the ministry of environment to ministry of environment and climate change, reviving the operations and mandate of Water Shed Erosion and Climate Change Management Agency ( WECCMA) to its full operations by assigning the executive secretary to man it, the Refuse Management Sanitation Agency (REMASAB) and ACReSAL as well as organising a workshop 0n climate change policy by WECCMA in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders among other interventions.

Earlier, in her address, the founder, Surge Africa, Nasreen Al-Ameen, said the gathering was a platform for cross fertilisation of ideas, opinions and knowledge on how to bound together, especially the Northwest region which is considered as the most vulnerable area that are mostly affected by the climate change issues such as flooding, erosion as well as low production in agriculture and the need to put all hands on deck for prompt and quick response to the issue.
