The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, has cancelled a proposed students’ excursion to New Bussa in Niger State over security concerns raised by parents and other stakeholders.
The institution said the decision followed a review of the security situation in the area, which had earlier been proposed as the site for the eight-week mandatory field exercise for 400-level Fisheries students.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti, the university disclosed that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai, had rejected the proposed trip long before public concerns escalated.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor, who was already aware of the security challenges in the area, directed the Department of Fisheries to identify a safer alternative location for the exercise.
“When the idea of going to New Bussa came up, the Vice Chancellor, who was already aware of the security situations in the area, had long ago rejected the trip,” the statement said.
The university added that Tiga Dam in Kano State had now been approved as the new venue for the mandatory field exercise.
“The students are now going to Tiga Dam in Kano for the mandatory exercise,” the statement added.
The management reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of students both on and off campus, assuring parents and guardians that no student would be exposed to any unsafe environment.
“The University management never jokes with students’ safety and welfare within and off campus,” Abdullahi stated.
He further urged parents and guardians to remain calm, stressing that there was no plan to take students to New Bussa or any other insecure location for academic activities.
The clarification followed concerns reportedly expressed by parents and guardians over the proposed trip involving more than 30 students to Niger State, which some families considered unsafe due to prevailing security challenges in parts of the country.
