Kanyip Lauds Tinubu, Wike For Advancing Judicial Independence

The President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Justice Benedict Kanyip, has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for initiating the construction of official residences for judges of the court, describing the project as a major step toward strengthening judicial welfare, security, and independence.

Kanyip spoke on Tuesday, delivering a goodwill message during the presidential flag-off of the construction of the NICN Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja.

He said the project reflected the federal government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for judicial officers to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without fear, distraction, or external influence.

According to him, the initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, demonstrates a strategic investment in the judiciary and underscores the administration’s determination to promote judicial autonomy through improved welfare packages.

“It is with great joy that I deliver this goodwill message on behalf of the judges, management and staff of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

“The presidential flag-off of the construction of official residences for judges of the NICN marks a strategic affirmation of judicial welfare, security and independence,” he said.

Kanyip expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, for supporting the initiative, and lauded the FCT Administration for conceptualising and driving the project to fruition.

He noted that the housing scheme was being launched at a historic moment, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Trade Disputes Decree No. 7 of 1976, which established the National Industrial Court.

The NICN President recalled that although the decree came into effect on 1 January 1976, the court did not commence operations until 1978 following the appointment of its first President, the late Justice Paul Atela Day.

Kanyip said the provision of safe, comfortable, and secure residences for judges was essential for the effective functioning of the judiciary, stressing that judicial officers perform optimally when their personal security and mental well-being are guaranteed.

He identified several benefits of the housing project, including improved security for judges, promotion of institutional dignity, reinforcement of judicial welfare policies, and the creation of long-term assets that would provide comfort during active service and after retirement.

“Purpose-built accommodation serves as a practical tool to safeguard judicial autonomy, allowing judges to focus entirely on their crucial responsibilities,” he stated.

The NICN President further observed that the project would help eliminate the longstanding challenge of judges living in rented or inadequate accommodation, while enhancing public confidence in the administration of justice.

He described the housing initiative as a practical demonstration of government support for the judiciary rather than mere rhetoric.

Kanyip also recalled the support Wike had previously extended to the National Industrial Court during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State.

According to him, the former governor donated a court building and four residential houses for judges serving in the Port Harcourt Division, a gesture that he said significantly improved the court’s efficiency and effectiveness.

“This singular support enabled the NICN to function effectively in Port Harcourt and allowed the judges to fully dedicate themselves to their responsibilities of interpreting and applying the law,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the execution of the new project, Kanyip said Wike’s track record in infrastructure development had transformed Abuja and assured stakeholders that the judges’ quarters would be delivered to the highest standard and within schedule.

“The future of the Nigerian judiciary looks bright indeed, and we at the NICN are ready to contribute to a more focused and efficient court system,” he said.

He congratulated the FCT minister and his team on the commencement of the project and reiterated the court’s gratitude to the Federal Government for prioritising judicial welfare and institutional development.
