The Katsina State government has kicked off distribution of bags of cement and roofing sheets worth N50 million to flood victims in the state.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) launched the distribution in the state capital yesterday. The beneficiaries are the 611 victims across seven local government areas of the state.
Speaking at the event, the SEMA executive director, Hajiya Binta Dangani said the disbursement of the building materials was in fulfilment of the promise made by the state governor, Umar Dikko Radda to assist the flood victims, adding that the beneficiaries were carefully selected from the recent assessment the agency carried out on building structures destroyed in the flood disaster.
She said the governor directed for the distribution of the items to the beneficiaries, saying in less than 100 days in office the Radda administration, spent about N50 million on relief materials to victims.
“We’ve given support of beds and facilities to some hospitals worth about N20 million.
“We have gone to local government areas and assessed where flood has caused damages and taken relief materials there. This one is meant for seven local government areas to benefit from the kind gesture of the governor. They are people in Katsina State capital, from Sabuwar Unguwar, Dutun Katsira and Dutsen Amare. About 265 persons previously collected food items, mattresses among others free of charge,” she added.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilise the items given to them and not to sell it, adding that government cannot do everything for them.
