The Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State has distributed relief materials to residents displaced by recent bandit attacks and is also footing the medical bills of victims receiving treatment.

The beneficiaries are currently taking refuge in communities across Kebbe and neighbouring Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attacks reportedly led to loss of lives and the destruction of shops, vehicles and food reserves belonging to residents.

To cushion the hardship faced by displaced residents of Kebbe, Ungushi, Girkau, Umbutu, Asarara, Nasarawa and other affected communities, the Kebbe Local Government Council distributed emergency relief materials to affected families.

The chairman of Kebbe Local Government Area, Alhaji Musa Garba Kuchi, disclosed that the council had so far distributed no fewer than 290 bags of 50kg garri, 25 bags of groundnut cake and kuli-kuli, as well as 12 bags of salt to the victims.

He added that the council also donated 200 insecticide-treated mosquito nets, 200 rubber mats, 200 plastic kettles, 200 plastic bowls and other essential items to the beneficiaries.

In a related development, Kuchi said the local government was shouldering the treatment of 10 victims wounded in the attacks at the state-owned Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko and other hospitals.

According to him, the council is also providing all the medications and drugs required by the patients, who he said are responding positively to treatment.

“We are doing everything humanly possible to ensure the success of their treatment, including providing their routine feeding,” he said.

Kuchi commended the Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, for his swift response to the humanitarian and security needs of residents following the recent attacks in parts of Kebbe Local Government Area.

The assistance is aimed at providing immediate relief to affected households while they await a lasting solution to the security challenges that forced them from their communities.

The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the local government council for the relief materials, saying the assistance would help ease their hardship.

They, however, called for intensified security measures and prayed for the restoration of peace to enable them to return safely to their communities.
