Kebbi Assembly Passes Electricity Regulatory 2024 Bill

Kebbi State House of Assembly has passed the Electricity Regulatory Bill 2024.

The bill was passed yesterday after the sitting of the Committee on Rural and Community Development at the Assembly chaired by the speaker, Hon Muhammed Usman Zuru.

Zuru disclosed that the bill will allow government to establish the Electricity Regulatory Commission for the state in the areas of electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, supply and promote access to electricity in the state through increased private sector investments or public private sector partnerships in grid, mini-grid and other off grid electricity options using renewable and non-renewable fuel sources in the state and for any purposes connected therewith.

He also revealed that the bill before it was passed, went into first and second readings on the floor of the House and later passed on public hearing and later submitted to the assembly for deliberation and later passed it into law.

Chairman committee on electricity regulatory bill, Hon Farouq Abubakar told journalists shortly after the passing of the bill that the committee has studied the bill which comprises of 120 sections and a schedule and in the process of scrutinising the bill, relevant stakeholders were invited for public hearings which was conducted on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Abubakar noted that the bill will be a backing material for government to establish and regulate as well as source revenue in the power sector in the state.

He also disclosed that rural and urban communities will henceforth have access to electricity.
