The Kebbi State Government has finally resolved the water supply woes of Birnin Kebbi residents, announcing that the repaired waterworks will be back online from Tuesday.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, announced on Monday, saying, “We have been on site for several days monitoring the process, and I am pleased to inform the public that water supply to residents in Birnin Kebbi will resume tomorrow, Tuesday.”
Bala-Tafida revealed that Governor Nasir Idris had established a task force to oversee the swift rehabilitation of the waterworks, adding that the committee comprised top officials from various ministries and security agencies.
“The committee includes the SSG, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK, Commissioner of Water Resources, Hon. Bello Abdullahi Kaoje and officials from the Ministry of Water Resources, security agencies, and technical staff of the Kebbi State Water Board,” he said.
The announcement comes after a major burst at the Dukku waterworks was reported on January 1, leaving residents without a water supply. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Alhaji Isah Arzika, had explained that engineers had detected the burst and taken swift action to shut down the machines and minimise damage.
“We had to source and deploy replacement pumping machines to evacuate the flooded areas, and a team of engineers is on site to dismantle the affected machines for proper drying and testing,” Arzika said.
