The Kebbi State government has responded to the recent press statement by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Kebbi State Chapter regarding the flood disaster that affected parts of the state.

In a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Kebbi State Chapter, Isah Abubakar Assalafi, the government expressed its appreciation for the PDP’s sympathy toward the disaster victims.

He emphasised that the government acknowledged the severity of the situation and extended its condolences to those who lost their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones during this difficult time.

He, however, said the government also expressed regret over the PDP’s decision to use this moment of grief to make what it described as “baseless political accusations.” The PDP had alleged that the Kebbi State government failed to take proactive measures to prevent the floods, a claim the government strongly refuted.

Assalafi emphasised that the administration, under the leadership of Dr Comrade Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, is deeply committed to the safety and welfare of the people of Kebbi State. He highlighted that the administration’s top priority is the welfare and security of its citizens, as enshrined in the Constitution.

He underscored the government’s comprehensive flood management strategy, which includes early warning systems, continuous dredging of waterways, embankment construction, and collaboration with relevant agencies to mitigate the effects of flooding.

Assalafi stated that these proactive measures have significantly reduced the impact of flooding in recent years. However, he also noted that natural disasters like floods often occur beyond human control, despite the best precautionary measures.

He reiterated that in the aftermath of this year’s floods, the Kebbi State government swiftly mobilised relief materials, including food supplies, shelter, and medical assistance, to support the affected communities.

Assalafi urged the PDP Kebbi State Chapter to prioritise the people’s interests above political animosity and to collaborate with the Kauran Gwandu-led administration to create an environment of trust and cooperation. He stressed the importance of working together to achieve sustainable development and prosperity for Kebbi State.

He reaffirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
