A former captain of the Super Falcons, Kikelomo Ajayi, has showered praises on President Bola Tinubu for the rewards given to the champions of the just-concluded Women Africa Nations Cup in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Nigerian women national team defeated host Morocco 3-2 in the final of the competition to clinch the trophy for the 10th time for the country.
President Tinubu hosted the 2025 WAFCON team in Abuja, where he announced a reward of a three-bedroom flat and a cash reward of 100,000 dollars in naira equivalent to each of the players. 50 dollars for the technical crew members and the backroom staff while they were all accorded the National Honour of OON.
Ajayi, in a response said that she was elated with the kind gesture of President Tinubu to the ladies which she stressed was well-deserved.
“It is not easy. I know what these players went through and I have been through similar terrain. They deserve the rewards and the President as the father of us all did well,” she said.
Ajayi featured for the team as a player in 1998, 2000, and 2002 and also captained Nigeria to win the WAFCON trophy in 2004 and 2006. She also featured at the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
The former skipper however appealed to President Tinubu to extend a similar gesture to the former members who helped in setting a template for the current team.
“We have a forum as ex-internationals and we are all happy with the current team but we appeal to our daddy, Mr. President to also reward us for setting the tone for the historic feat we are all celebrating today. The NSC and the NFF did well to make this happen and we pray it continues so that the players will be motivated to do more for Nigeria,” Ajayi added.
